Another great month at the Precinct started with our first Trade School a Calligraphy Workshop led by resident Artist Joao Abott Gribben. Joao took us through a whistle stop tour of the history of Calligraphy,
taught us how to hold a calligraphy nib at a correct angle and how to write our names using the gothic alphabet.
Dorothy who came to the workshop said ‘I really enjoyed it. Sitting together afterwards was filled with humour and laughter’.
The month continued with our knitting circle that meets on Thursdays 1-3pm. Lyne who has been coming since the beginning completed her epic scarf.
Lynne who has not knitted since she was a child has said of the group ‘Thursday’s is my new favourite day of the week!’. The group is open to all skill levels. Just look at Lynne’s scarf she completed in just 5 weeks!
We ventured north this month with Julia who runs our Knitting Circle with a visit to Significant Seams in Walthamstow.
Significant Seams builds community through crafting and supports people in vulnerable life moments. They provide a welcoming community sewing and crafting space called the ‘Community Living Room’ in a high street premises in Walthamstow, East London, which brings people together across various ethnic, faith and social divides to learn new skills and to get involved in community projects.
This month was also our first major event as we welcomed hundreds into the precinct for London Marathon with a DJ, live band, food and a lot of cheering.
It was particular nice to welcome people new to the Precinct and say hi to some of our regulars. Well done to the Yurt Cafe staff who kept the queue moving even when it was out the door!
Our Yurt Lates continued with a Cranium rematch at board game night, the second Tuesday of every month.
Sarah and Claire joined us for the first time, after hearing about board game night during a visit to the cafe the weekend before.
We had a very special Yurt Salon with the BA, MA and PhD level creative writers of Goldsmiths University – the university that gave us Damien Hirst, Blur, Tracey Emin, Anthony Gormley, Evie Wyld, Bernardine Evaristo and Mark Grist.
We ended the month with a music evening in the Yurt Café courtesy of Blues Indigo Jazz Inquisition. We’re looking forward to all that will come in this summer. Keep up to date by following us on twitter @SKPrecinct and @YurtCafeLondon @RFSKLondon.
